United Methodist Women
The United Methodist Women of Carrier Mills First United Methodist Church are part of a one hundred and forty+ year old mission and service organization with more than 800,000 members worldwide. UMW's stated purpose is threefold: first, to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; second, to develop a creative and supportive fellowship; and third, to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
The members of the Carrier Mills First UMW are proud to make financial contributions to a variety of projects and programs related to women, children, and youth locally, within the United States, and in more than one hundred countries around the globe. They also have a tradition of prompting action for social justice.
Where can you find the UMW members of Carrier Mills First? They are in the kitchen providing food for special events and funeral dinners for bereaved families. They are leading afterschool and reading programs. They provide Christmas gifts for economically disadvantaged children. They take special collections to help the United Methodist Committee on Relief provide aid to victims of natural disasters and political conflict. They raise money for mission trips and to support the work of missionaries to bring the gospel and hope to some of the most forgotten corners of the planet. In short, they share the heart of God with friends and strangers in need, wherever they may be.
If you would like to be part of this faith building and life changing women's organization, join us on the first Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall of the church. We'll save a seat for you!
Sisters of Grace
In 2001 the well established United Methodist Women of Carrier Mills First UMC expanded to include a newly formed circle of younger working women. This new circle call themselves the Sisters of Grace. This second circle was started to enable more women with busy daytime schedules to be involved in the important mission and service work of the UMW. Today, they are one of the few younger members UMW groups in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference.
Under the mentorship and guidance of Melinda Gowdy, a long time UMW member, this new circle followed the traditional group model of a strong focus on Bible study, fellowship and supporting missions. Soon, however, they found themselves wanting a more active, hands on approach to their ministry. This focus has helped to establish them as an integral part of our church and the community.
The Sisters of Grace are committed to service both globally and locally. They help support the Cunningham Children’s Home, the Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House, and Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (filling student backpacks with school supplies and healthcare items). They have hosted fundraisers such as a "Bike-a-Thon" to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They make and send “Soldier Boxes”, or care packages for our neighbors serving in the military. They buy Christmas presents for local children and families who are economically disadvantaged. And any time they know of other specific needs in our community, the Sisters can be counted on to lend a helping hand.
If you are looking for a way to be personally involved in mission and service, we invite you to join us and explore the possibilities.
